  • Microbiology and Cell Science Bachelor’s Degree Course Overview

    The UF Online Microbiology and Cell Science Bachelor’s Degree provides the final two years of a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Cell Science. The program is designed to fit seamlessly with an Associates of Arts degree from a Florida state college.

    The UF Online Microbiology and Cell Science program consists of approximately 50 upper division credit hours, broken down into four semesters. Most courses are only offered in specific terms, as indicated below in the program advising worksheet.

    Learning Online

    Students enrolled in the Off-Campus Microbiology and Cell Science Program are taught by the same outstanding faculty as UF’s on-campus students. Live lectures on campus are delivered over the Internet via streaming audio, video, and PowerPoint slides allowing participating students to feel like they’re a part of our campus community and classrooms. Students receive support from professors, teaching assistants, and academic advisers via e-mail, chat rooms and telephone.

    Although students can view lectures with a 56K modem, video motion is much smoother with higher speed connections such as those provided by DSL, cable, or satellite services.

    Program Pacing

    The Off-Campus Microbiology and Cell Science Program is designed to be completed in two years of enrollment. An additional summer semester, after Semester 6, is needed for those students who did not complete the Organic Chemistry sequence as part of the AA degree. Students who work full time or have other commitments and have less time to devote to classes are encouraged to slow down and take courses at a pace that works best for them.

    Students must complete all required courses through UF Online Microbiology and Cell Science Program to graduate, except for the courses listed below, which must be completed as a transient student at a local accredited institution:

    Laboratory Courses

    The University of Florida Online BS degree has three credits of lab requirements, one online, and two on campus.

    • MCB 3015c Online Lab Skills Boot Camp (online) (pre-req for MCB 4934)
    • MCB 4934 Microbiology Lab Boot Camp (in person accelerated immersion lab, 5 days long) (pre-req for MCB 4034L)
    • MCB 4034L Advanced Microbiology Lab (in person accelerated immersion lab, 5 days long)
    • MCB 3015c will be taught in 2017 during the spring semester as a fully online course.
    • MCB 4934 will be taught in 2017 during the summer from April 29th to May 3, 2017, EVERY DAY ALL DAY LONG (8-5)
    • MCB 4034L will be taught in 2017 during the summer from May 5th to May 9, 2017, EVERY DAY ALL DAY LONG (8-5)

    • Students must complete at least 18 credits of 3000/4000 at UF in order to graduate. These courses can come from any department at UF, including additional microbiology coursework.

    • Effective Fall 2017, students can search for electives by selecting “UF Online Program” in the required program search field
    • 2000 level courses can be accepted for general elective credit on a case-by-case basis.

    Sample Schedules at UF

    Sample Schedule 1 applies to students who have completed an AA degree from the Biotechnology Program at Brevard Community College including the entire Organic Chemistry sequence. It is also specific to any student who has completed the Organic Chemistry sequence as part of the AA degree or who has returned to the State/Community College to finish up the Organic Chemistry sequence prior to admission to UF.

    SPC 2600 is required and it is recommended it be completed at the community college prior to completion of the AA degree.
