  • Microbiology and Cell Science bachelor’s degree Course Overview

    The Off-Campus Microbiology and Cell Science bachelor’s degree provides the final two years of a four-year Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology and Cell Science. The program is designed to fit seamlessly with an Associates of Arts degree from a Florida state college.

    The Off-campus Microbiology and Cell Science program consists of approximately 60 upper division credit hours, broken down into four semesters. Most courses are only offered in specific terms, as indicated below.

    Students must complete all required courses through UF’s Off-Campus Microbiology and Cell Science Program to graduate, with the exception of PHY2053 and L and PHY2054 and L which may be taken at UF or any other accredited institution. The required Microbiology lab courses are offered at Miami-Dade College, Santa Fe State College, Palm Beach State College Lake Worth Campus, the IFAS Indian River Research Center, and the IFAS Apopka Research Education Center. If you are not able to take the lab courses at one of these facilities, you may take an accelerated lab class at the Gainesville, FL campus that lasts approximately 11 days. Please contact your adviser for more details.

    For State College students other than Brevard, the Organic Chemistry sequence; Organic Chemistry 1 and 2 and Organic Chemistry Laboratory may also have to be taken at an accredited institution other than UF if they are not a specific requirement for the AA degree. These students can choose to remain at their State College and complete the Organic Sequence prior to attending the UF online program or take them as a transient student after admission to UF.     Learning Online

    Students enrolled in the Off-Campus Microbiology and Cell Science Program are taught by the same outstanding faculty as UF’s on-campus students. Live lectures on campus are delivered over the Internet via streaming audio, video, and PowerPoint slides allowing participating students to feel like they’re a part of our campus community and classrooms. Students receive support from professors, teaching assistants, and academic advisers via e-mail, chat rooms and telephone.

    Although students can view lectures with a 56K modem, video motion is much smoother with higher speed connections such as those provided by DSL, cable, or satellite services.

    Program Pacing

    The Off-Campus Microbiology and Cell Science Program is designed to be completed in two years of enrollment. An additional summer semester, after Semester 6, is needed for those students who did not complete the Organic Chemistry sequence as part of the AA degree. Students who work full time or have other commitments and have less time to devote to classes are encouraged to slow down and take courses at a pace that works best for them. Below are suggested plans to consider. Please remember that they are just suggested schedules that may not be suitable for all students. You should plan to discuss your schedule with your adviser prior to registration each semester.

    Sample Schedule 1 applies to students who have completed an AA degree from the Biotechnology Program at Brevard Community College including the entire Organic Chemistry sequence. It is also specific to any student who has completed the Organic Chemistry sequence as part of the AA degree or who has returned to the State/Community College to finish up the Organic Chemistry sequence prior to admission to UF.
